The National parks
Bulgaria has a long tradition of nature conservation and
protected areas creation and management. Pirin, Rila and
Central Balkan National Parks with a total area of 193,049
hectares are among the largest and most valuable protected
areas in Europe. They contain some of Europe’s remaining
wild regions & offer excellent opportunities for tourism,
scientific research and education. They include mountains,
rivers, lakes, natural landmarks, waterfalls, cliffs ,
alpine meadows and exceptional landscapes. The national
protected areas system also includes the following
categories: 11 nature parks, 55 reserves, 35 maintained
reserves, 457 natural landmarks with a rich flora and fauna
